Minneapolis has often been called the first great American city West of the Mississippi. On this tour, you’ll follow the path of our famed river which first led the Dakota, and then Father Hennepin to this region.
A dual-language portmanteau, Minneapolis comes from the Dakota word “Mni,” for water and the Greek “polis” for city. Appropriately, you’ll meet just near the water at the famed Guthrie Theatre before you begin your walk alongside the Mill City Ruins.
You’ll meet your tour guide who will introduce the city’s history, then you’ll make your way through the urban jungle, finding unexpected walking routes and hidden secrets about our metropolis.
Crucial to any Complete Walking Tour experience is a coffee – you’ll sit down with your tour guide and have a casual chat. This interaction will offer an opportunity to share what brought you on the tour. For out-of-towners, our tour guides can give advice about visiting the Mall of America, seeing our capital city of St. Paul, or heading into the Minnesota northwoods. For locals, our tour guides can give off-the-beaten-track recommendations for hidden bars, secret cafes, and fantastic bike paths.
At the conclusion of your coffee you’ll continue on exploring the city’s famed Skyways. Minneapolis is home to 9.5 miles of twisting skyways that are as labyrinthine as they are long. Our knowledge of which skyways are open on which days will help you avoid the bitterly cold Minnesota winters, should you be taking this tour in our colder months.
After you weave your way through the Skyways, you’ll end up in the Warehouse District, since rebranded as Minneapolis’ North Loop. This newly-gentrified neighborhood is one of the city’s most attractive, a place where million-dollar condos sit next to hipster haven breweries, world-famous restaurants and lots of dog-walkers.
The concept of the Complete Minneapolis Walking Tour is if you’re booking just one tour of Minneapolis, this is the one you need to do. After learning the full story of the city in this three hour tour, your tour guide will say “cheers” as they buy you a beer and answer any lingering questions, and you’ll leave with a newfound appreciation for all that makes this city great.
